    Management Studies and career options

Interested in management career? Some well known names from the corporate world share their views on management courses to help you weave your way through the challenging world of management.

Raveena Desraj Shrestha, Chief Business Officer, Mega Bank
Ashutosh Tiwari, Management Expert and Consultant
Barsha Shrestha, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Clean Energy Development Bank

What options and opportunities do students enjoy when applying for a management course?
Ashutosh Tiwari: I actually do not think that students must indeed go for management courses even if they want to be managers. Yes, a management degree surely opens a few more doors, but that’s primarily at the beginning of one’s career. Likewise, if people want to change career tracks after working for some years, then, going back to university to earn a management degree may help too. But strictly speaking, being a manager is not like being a medical doctor, for which you really have to be a medical school graduate.

All things considered, a management degree certainly helps, but it is not absolutely necessary to be a manager.

Raveena Desraj Shrestha: In my opinion taking up management studies is useful for anyone; be it a housewife, a doctor, engineer or any professional as at the end of the day, management teaches you many things involving financial management, people management, time management, self management, leadership and many other factors all useful to lead a focused, more ‘informed’ life leading to better decision making.

Barsha Shrestha: I will list out four different reasons:
    1. There is a demand for managers in almost every sector (healthcare management, sports management, marketing management, agriculture management et cetera). For example, Israeli farmers who represent less than 10 per cent of the total population of approximately 8.1 million produce more than Nepali farmers who represent around 70 per cent of the total population. This is not only due to lack of agricultural experts but lack of management know- how.

    2. Globalisation and ever increasing competition have further increased the importance of management disciplines.

    3. The above reasons have resulted in greater job openings in the management sector.

    4. It is probably the most heterogeneous field of study with numerous degrees available (for example; finance, marketing, accounting, entrepreneurship, change management, et cetera)

How does a management degree lead to a successful career?
Ashutosh Tiwari: Courses and studies help, but up to a point. A degree acts primarily as a signal to the labour market that you have studied this and that. But at the end of the day, good management really boils down to a combination of applied common sense and good judgment about people, resources and products. It is also about making use of skills in finance and operations to understand the small details and the big picture. And I would further add that because the world is changing so fast, an ability to continuously and curiously learn, un-learn and re-learn, and to adapt and adjust to new and unfamiliar ideas, concepts, and approaches - these abilities are likely to be more important for long-term success than any fixed modules of courses that one takes.

Raveena Desraj Shrestha: The management profession is a lucrative stream the world over. It enables one to combine one’s innate skills which may be coupled with a subject that one can specialise in like human resource, finance or marketing. Therefore, studying management expands one’s saleability while equipping an individual to better understand the intrinsic facets of all round life management. This betters the chances of professional success and career progression. What more can an individual ask for?

Barsha Shrestha: A management degree can lead to a successful career as:
    1. It is a field that provides ample opportunities for growth.
    2. It is one of the highest paying fields.
    3. The knowledge you gain through this course is transferable in the global context.

    BBA: Developing business management skills

Managers are required in any sector and in any field. This is why, BBA graduates have multiple CAREER Choice

If you have just completed your plus two and want to pursue an undergraduate degree in management but are confused with which subject suits you the best, then the Bachelor’s
in Business Administration (BBA) course is an option you should consider.

With the liberty for students from any stream — science, management or humanities to join the course, broad career prospects and recognition from foreign universities has added charm to this four-year programme.

The BBA course is designed to produce professional managers and entrepreneurs. It provides students basic knowledge of business concepts, procedures and methodologies to operate an organisation. Moreover, it enables students to have a sound conceptual foundation and practical skills in various areas of business with analytical and operational skills to resolve business problems.

After completing her ‘A’ Level management course, Bhagyashree Adhikary, joined the BBA course in Apex College. An undergraduate, Adhikary said, “I have always had a keen interest in the management sector and knowing that the BBA course includes improved and advance curriculum, I joined the course.” Moreover, she said that as the BBA is a four-year programme, it is internationally accepted for Masters degree in universities across the world. According to her, the course enables student to handle basic managerial work at any organisation or company.

“Managers are required in any sector and in any field. This is why, BBA graduates have multiple career choices,” said Ashish Tiwari, Principal and Director of Ace Institution of Management. He informed that Ace has BBA-BI course for students who opt for specialisation in banking and insurance. According to him, the primary requirements for studying BBA are Plus Two from any stream, basic knowledge about English, quantitative aptitude and the right attitude.

“Deciding a career is not an easy task nor is it too difficult,” Tiwari said. “Students need to consult and get opinions from all but at the end they should decide what is best for them,” he added. Citing that there are many choices in the management sector, he said, “Unlike a decade ago, choosing your career should not be accidental or forced. It depends upon individuals and there is wide scope in every sector.”

The BBA programme usually includes general business courses and advanced courses for specific concentrations. This course enables student to learn fundamentals of hardcore business subjects like accounting, marketing, finance, economics, organisational behaviour, human resource, information management, et cetera. Besides these, subjects of social sciences which help students learn about their society are also included. The programme is available under Tribhuwan University, Purwanchal University, Pokhara University and Kathmandu University. Besides domestic universities, colleges affiliated with foreign universities are also offering courses with specific concentration in banking and insurance, entrepreneurship, et cetera. The selection process to join a BBA course differs from college to college. But generally, students need to appear for computerised entrance tests, presentations and interviews.

Narottam Aryal, Executive Director and Principal of King’s College said, “The syllabus of BBA is different for different countries and universities. Basically the course is designed to develop mid-level managers after completing the programme.” Informing that it is appropriate for students to have experience in the job market right after the completion of the undergrad programme, he said, “As this programme is a professional course, students learn necessary skills in technology, business operations, communications, marketing among others to work in managerial level positions in any organisation.” He quickly added that the development of skills in students again depends upon delivery mechanism of colleges.

According to him, the popular specialisation subjects in BBA are marketing, finance and human resources management. After completion of the BBA course, students can join MBA course, developmental subjects, economics, information technology and any other humanities subjects for further studies.

    The charm of Chartered Accountancy

Chartered Accountancy, a highly prestigious and globally acclaimed career option could be your option too

With merely a decade-long history in Nepal, Chartered Accountancy (CA) has become one of the most preferred subjects for students these days. Instead of a university, the CA programme is entirely regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of a country. Thus the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN), established in 1997, has been regulating the programme here since its introduction in 2000. At present there are roughly less than 1,000 Chartered Accountants (CAs) registered at ICAN both from Nepal and India. Going by the statistics, this can be considered as tremendous growth as compared to a decade ago. However, this growth too is not sufficient to meet the demand in Nepal and the world at large.

“The unique and enormous career prospects that CA enjoys has created a buzz among people and the figure will certainly rise,” states Naba Raj Burlakoti, Founder and Chairperson of Prime Chartered Academy who considers business transactions stretching worldwide is increasing the demand for more CAs. He also points out to how people are attracted to the CA profession because of the phenomenal career options it has in trade, industry and commerce. “The prospects laid down by this career path does not limit itself to trade and business,” he states, trying to clarify the flexibility that it offers to work in varied sectors from manufacturing companies, government offices, public services to banking and financial institutions besides starting CAs their own private practice.

According to Burlakoti, the four years and three months long CA course demands a lot of dedication and hard work from students. CA is that one course that also comes with low education cost. “Nevertheless it is considered a prestigious and rewarding profession,” he says. “Students who complete their course in India and willing to practice in Nepal must go through a year’s training at a Nepali Institute and should pass the exams on Law and Tax conducted by ICAN,” informs Burlakoti.

“The CA course is in high demand and various CA institutes have been established resulting in a considerable slowdown in the number of students going to study in India,” says Deepesh K Thapaliya MD of CCMA College. According to him, CA course is the combination of theoretical, practical, technical and more learning of accountancy, taxation, auditing and overall management of business transactions. The course is divided into three levels; CAP-I, CAP-II and CAP-III. The duration for the first two levels is six and nine months respectively, whereas the final level is three years long which includes practical training too. “Talking about the most appealing aspect of CAs besides their job, is the ability they have towards making decisions and the tact they display in enhancing profits for the company,” he shares.

The CA course does not put any barrier to entry of students in terms of their performance at the plus two or the faculty they come from. This, according to Burlakoti, should not discourage anyone from the management background because every subject included in this course is taught from the foundation level.

    • Course duration: 4 years 3 months (almost five years)
    • Fee structure: Rs 200,000 to Rs 300,000 (depending on institute)
    • Scholarships: Most of the institutes in Nepal provide certain amount of scholarship depending on the students’ performance in plus two and during the course
    • Eligibility criteria: Plus two and A-Level or equivalent from recognised educational institution
    • Examination session: June and December

US embassy introduces online visa processing

The Embassy of the United States of America in Kathmandu will introduce a new fee payment, appointment and document delivery service for the non-immigrant visa unit from Monday. There will, however, be no change to the Embassy’s procedures for handling immigrant and diversity visas, said a US Embassy statement.

Nabil Bank will no longer accept visa application fees.

Travelers who have already applied for a visa, have paid the fees, and arranged for an interview appointment through Nabil Bank are urged to complete the visa process under the current system.

The best and worst of one's college

Kanchan Shrestha, 20, is a student of Bachelor’s in Business Studies (BBS) at The Times International College, Charkhal. “The fact that my college is equipped with all the necessary sports equipments makes me happy. The college’s premises are also well-managed and we have enough space to play outdoor games.” He adds that he feels good to go to college as his college has a fine interior and is well furnished.

What he doesn’t like about his college is the struggle he has to go through for buying food from the canteen during the lunch break. “There’s a huge crowd and we’ve to queue up for a long time. This becomes intolerable especially in days when we’re extremely hungry,” Kanchan shares.

For Prakriti Dhakal, 20, an engineering student at Cosmos College of Management and Technology in Lalitpur, the best thing about her college is the fact that it feels like her home. “The teachers and staff are very cooperative and they try their best to help the students grow,” she observes. She finds it very comfortable taking help from her teachers when it comes to understanding the chapters and she also likes to sit and have conversations with them during free time.

What disheartens her regarding her college is the fact that some of the students make big issues out of small things. “They also argue over petty issues, which disturbs other students, too,” she shares.

Likewise, Rashmi Joshi, 20, an undergraduate student of Business Administration at Uniglobe College of Management in Mid-Baneshwar, says that she loves her college because a practical approach of learning is adopted in classes. “Instead of asking us to simply mug up course books, we’re encouraged to learn things the practical way. We’re taken to different organizations for researches and their in-depth learning,” shares Rashmi.

However, one thing that she dislikes about her college is that she has to wake up early in the morning for classes as it starts at 6:30 in the morning. “I don’t get to sleep enough even on public holidays as we usually have classes then, too,” she says.

Sujan Chitrakar, 19, 1st year student of Bachelor in Manag
ement (BIM) in St Xavier’s College in Maitighar finds it interesting that many events are organized in his college. “I love going to college’s parties and also take part in events related with social work. Academic events like debate and essay competitions are other aspects to watch out for at our college,” he says.

Sujan, however hates it when he doesn’t have anything to do after classes. “We have a café outside our college and students usually spend a lot of time there doing nothing but chatting. I don’t feel good about it as I feel that students should utilize their college days in the best way possible,” he shares.

So what do you like and dislike about your college?

Entrance tests will be mandatory: TU

With the new academic session starting next year, all the students will have to prove their eligibility and competency in order to secure enrolment in any of the Tribhuvan University (TU) constituent and affiliated colleges.

The ‘Five Year Strategic Plan’ endorsed by the TU Senate on Sunday has a provision to limit the intake of students and make it mandatory for them to sit the entrance examination for all the faculties.

Concluding that the high number of student enrolment has actually hampered efforts to produce quality and competitive human resource, the university has decided to fix class sizes and have sizeable intake of new students. Currently, students are not required to take entrance examination to get enrolment in the TU colleges except for medicine, engineering and a few programmes in management and law.

“From the next academic session, TU will have fixed student intake, entrance examinations and fixed class sizes,” said TU’s Acting Rector Chinta Mani Pokhrel while presenting the Plan.

He claimed that the strategic plan has been introduced in response to the aspirations for improving the quality of education it has been providing and intends to bring changes in the current planning, programming and delivering academic progress.

The Plan also envisions the implementation of academic calendar, timely update of curriculum and integration of ICT in teaching-learning process, credit transfer, among others.

The Plan has set decentralised governance, equity and inclusiveness, performance-based incentives, researched-based education, quality-focused pedagogy, transparency, responsiveness, accountability, collaboration, cooperation, coordination, resource generation and financial sustainability for the university.

“A separate monitoring cell will be formed for quality assurance purposes,” reads the plan.

The Senate also endorsed a Rs 10.23 billion budget for the fiscal year 2014/15, two months after the due date. The budget is almost 100 percent increase compared to Rs 5.80 billion for the last fiscal year. Though the TU Senate last year had asked the government to release Rs 6.68 billion, the government had only allocated Rs 5.80 billion.

Of the total budget, Rs 2.63 billion will be managed by internal sources while remaining Rs 7.60 billion has to be allocated by the government. However, looking at the past trends, it is unlikely that the government will release the amount endorsed by the Senate.

According to TU Registrar Chandra Mani Poudel, of the total Capital expenditure Rs 5.72 billion will be used for salary and retirement benefits.

The Plan also aims to deposit some Rs 260 million in the Pension Fund to provide gratuity and other retirement benefits for TU’s retiring staff. The oldest university of the country has been facing problems in managing the pension for its employees owing to a lack of adequate government funding.
