Science scholarships for +2 students from 9 districts

The government has decided to provide free education and monthly living allowance for students who are forced to leave their home districts to study science in the higher secondary level.

Issuing a public directive on Sunday, the Department of Education has asked the District Education Offices in nine districts to submit the list of such students by mid-January. Tehrathum, Makawanpur, Khotang, Bhojpur, Manang, Mustang, Jajarkot, Doti and Dolpa districts lack the science stream in their public higher secondary schools. There is tuition fee waiver for students from the districts who are in Grade 11 in the public schools recommended by the Department apart from the monthly living allowance of Rs 3,000.

The government, in an agreement reached with the student unions while phasing out the Proficiency Certificate Level from the Tribhuvan University, had promised to establish at least one science Plus Two school in each district. Three years after the commitment, still nine of the 75 districts lack science education in the higher secondary level, compelling the government to announce the special package for the students there.

To qualify for the scholarship, students need a minimum of 50 percent marks in the School Leaving Certificate exams and must be studying in public HS schools prescribed by the Department. As per the terms, students from Tehrathum should study in an HSS in Dhankuta or Sunsari district while those from Makawanpur need to get enrolled in an HSS from Chitwan, Dhading or Parsa districts while those from Khotang should go to schools in Sunsari or Udaypur.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students from Bhojpur need to get enrolled in schools in Dhankuta or Morang while Kaski and Lamjung are the districts for students from Manang.

Aspiring science students from Mustang have to travel to Myagdi, Kaski or Baglung, those from Jajarkot need to get enrolled in an HSS in Surkhet or Rukum while the schools in Dadeldhura, Kailali or Kanchanpur are for students from Doti. Those from Dolpa have to get enrolled in higher secondary schools in Banke or Surkhet districts.

    Education for All targets ‘achievable’
Two years before the completion of the Education for All programme, the government has claimed it will achieve the set goals on time.

The Education Ministry said it has started evaluation of the achievements, and is working to devise programmes to be implemented after 2015. Education for All (EFA), a global programme that started in 2001, has set seven goals that include providing free and compulsory primary education to all children, increasing literacy rate to 90 percent and guaranteeing the right to education in own mother tongue.

Addressing a programme on Tuesday, Director General of the Department of Education Lawa Dev Awasthi said they have made improvements in all the goals and are near achieving the targets.

He, however, accepted that the government has failed to achieve the target of quality education. The government has claimed that enrolment in primary level has reached 95 percent. Likewise, the number of female teachers has increased while the student-teacher ratio has dropped significantly.

“Education became the agenda only of the Education Ministry, not a common goal of all the ministries,” he said. Unesco is providing technical support to prepare a national report on EFA implementation.

Mind your own business- BBA program Opportunties in Nepal

Rakshya Shahi is doing her BBA at Liberty College. A sixth semester student, she recently completed her two-month internship at Global IME Bank. Shahi said her interest in the business sector and economics led her to choose the subject. “If you do well in college, there are greater chances of getting a job,” said Shahi. She added that the increasing number of financial institutions in the country was a good thing for BBA students.

Just like Shahi, thousands of youths are pursuing BBA in the country. Experts believe that the attraction for the course among students is a result of the opportunity to develop themselves as entrepreneurs. The six dozen colleges in Kathmandu churn out 2,800 graduates annually.

“The BBA programme exposes students to various national corporate houses and financial institutions. This helps them to become better managers and corporate leaders,” said Pratap Joshi, executive director of Kantipur International College.

With the expanding scope of management in the country, management graduates with a high level of competency and practical knowledge are in great demand. Many business schools offer various programmes to equip students with the skills needed in a competitive market.

A business school is a management-based institution that confers bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in business administration. They teach a wide variety of subjects including accounting, administration, economics, finance, information systems, marketing, organisational behaviour, public relations, strategy, human resource management and quantitative methods.

Bijaya KC, dean of South Asian Institute of Management (SAIM) College, believes that students get a chance to interact with business leaders and corporate giants and visit various national and international organisations. “This programme prepares students for a professional career in business or public management at entry-level managerial positions,” said KC, adding that this has been a major attraction.

Also, around 200 financial institutions including banks and financial institutions take in students as interns who later get a chance to enter the sector as per their performance. Once they get a break, the good pay they receive at these institutions and the respect they get from society are also major motivating factors.

“While the salary might not be that attractive at first they get better pay within a year of joining, and this also entices them to join the course,” said KC.Meanwhile, Pranab Nara-yan Shrestha, coordinator (student admissions) of Cosmos College, believes that daily exposure of the faculty of management to technological ideas helps students to keep abreast of the rapidly changing world. “BBA graduates get acquainted with interactive teaching-learning techniques that help them identify with the subject matter. Frequent guest lectures by reputed personalities from the academic as well as the business sector provide valuable tips and a professional insight,” said Shrestha.

Similarly, many institutions have tied up with various international universities allowing them to provide international degrees in their homeland. Colleges such as Phoenix have tied up with international universities. “Students are glad that they can get an international degree studying in a Nepali college,” said Dr Binod Bahadur Khatri, Principal of Phoenix College of Management.

Phoenix has tied up with Lincoln University College, Malaysia. It enrols 105 students annually. He said that students studying for international degrees can transfer their credit hours to various universities abroad.

Binita Giri, a BBA student at VS Niketan, believes that the BBA course boosts their morale and inspires them to start business ventures on their own.“This course helps us to understand that the relationship between a boss and an employee is not only limited to money. It also teaches us to work as a team and manage our business well,” said Giri.

    Local college, foreign education

Colleges with foreign affiliation started in the early 2000s with a tremendous rise in the number of students flying abroad for higher studies

Students seeking international degrees had no option but to travel abroad for further studies until domestic educational institutions obtained affiliation from global universities and started providing the same education and degrees in the country.

The trend of establishing colleges with foreign affiliation started in the early 2000s with a tremendous increase in the number of students flying abroad for higher studies. As per the records of the Ministry of Education, there are around 90 academic institutions with international affiliation providing education including A Level courses. Colleges providing bachelor’s and Master’s courses too have increased significantly in the last one decade. Till date, 35 colleges have obtained membership in the International Education Pro-viders Association of Nepal (IEPAN), an umbrella organisation of colleges providing international education at the bachelor’s and Master’s levels. According to IEPAN, there are around 50 colleges in Nepal that are providing university education with foreign affiliation from educational institutions in the UK, the US, Switzerland, Thailand, Mala-ysia, Singapore and India.

Globalization in the academic sector has encouraged college operators in the country to run programmes from globally popular universities. “The attraction of students for courses with foreign affiliation has been rapidly increasing, and this has led to a rise in the number of such colleges,” said IEPAN Chairman Pankaj Jalan. He believes that exposure to international curricula makes students more competent and qualifies them for job options globally. It is also easier for graduates from such colleges to transfer their credits when they move to foreign colleges. Moreover, some of these colleges have arrangements under which half of the course is taught in Nepal and the remaining portion at the foreign universities with which they are affiliated. According to Jalan’s experience, students are most attracted to management followed by hospitality, computer science and information technology.
College operators say that though the fee structure of foreign-affiliated colleges is higher than that of other colleges, it is still very low compared to what it would cost to get the same degree abroad. “Global education at an affordable fee is the main factor behind the increase in the number of colleges with foreign affiliation,” said Binod Bahadur Khatri, principal of Phoenix College. “Unlike our colleges, foreign universities follow the academic calendar strictly and classes and examinations are held at fixed times. This is another reason behind the attraction for such colleges.”

According to college operators, foreign universities keep a close watch on the performance of the colleges to which they have granted affiliation. Officials from these universities visit the colleges twice a year to check the quality of the education being provided. As the qualification of the faculty and the teaching-learning methodology used plays a crucial role in determining the quality of the degrees awarded, these universities have set the criteria for the teachers appointed. The teachers should be competent to deliver the knowledge as demanded by the curricula. Therefore, some of the universities themselves provide training to the teachers. Apart from that, colleges should have the appropriate infrastructure including labs and libraries as specified by the respective universities to get their affiliation.

BBA : The broad-based business major

If you are a +2 graduate thinking of pursuing further studies in the management stream, there are lots of programmes available for you.

The BBA programme aims to prepare students to become competent, confident and socially responsive professionals

In Nepal, Management is the second-most sought after career in higher education, after Education, as it prepares students to take up managerial responsibilities in every sector. The education provides students with managerial and entrepreneurial skills, leadership qualities and problem- solving abilities. The management-stream choices in the bachelor’s level include Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor in Business Studies, Bachelor in Hotel Management, Bachelor in Information Management, Bachelor in Travels and Tourism Management, and Bachelor in Event Management, among others. However, among management students, the BBA is the most preferred course, which was introduced in the country some 15 years ago.

With the restoration of democracy 1990, Nepal adopted liberal economic polices that accelerated the pace of the establishment of industries, banks, insurance companies and large business complexes. The increase in the number of commercial entities also increased the demand for qualified managers who could lead both a business institution’s administrative and business activities together. The credit for introducing BBA in Nepal should go to Kathmandu University. In 1997, the increasing demand for qualified management professionals spurred KU to introduce BBA courses in the country. To provide students with a degree that would sell well not only in Nepal but also abroad, KU introduced the 120-credit-hour course, which is the most preferred managerial course globally.

The success gained by KU led Pokhara University to include a BBA programme from the very beginning of its operation in 2000, and that was followed by Tribhuvan University’s joining in (TU) in 2002. Similarly, the BBA and MBA were the programmes that the Purbanchal University started its service with. At present, there are over 70 colleges -38 under Pokhara University, 18 under TU, three under KU and the remaining under Purbachal University-that are offering the programme with the affiliation from the four universities. Similarly, there are dozens of colleges that are teaching the subject with affiliations from different universities from India, the UK and Australia. At present, around four thousand students can get enrolled in BBA colleges across the country.

The BBA programme aims to prepare students to become competent, skilled, confident and socially responsive professionals who can effectively take on managerial, entrepreneurial and leadership roles in business es and social organisations in today’s competitive environment. It offers a wide range of concentrations and elective courses to match the students’ individual interests that align with the demands of the market. With proper academic and course planning, students can take advantages of specialisations in two functional areas (administration and business ) of management within the same time period.

To cater to the students’ needs, many colleges have started tailoring their curriculum to keep up with the changing market. According to Kanal Regmi, principal of Nobel College, Kathmandu, the college’s BBA programe provides students with an opportunity for learning, gaining exposure and networking through its internship programme, which make them competent before they venture into the job market. In addition, unlike in many other courses, the students from the BBA faculty can easily transfer credits to foreign colleges, which is not easily achievable with other programmes. The other factor that makes this college’s programme highly sought is that students from all other faculties can also take the course.

Nepali students have also started opting for a BBA degree because most BBA programmes have a very respectable graduation rate. While the pass rate for the other faculties is hardly 40 percent, the success rate of the BBA programme is above 80 percent in all the universities. Unlike other programmes, most BBA programmes start their academic sessions on the designated start dates, and follow up with timely exams, whose results are published on time too. Similarly, there are ample job opportunities for the BBA graduate.

“A BBA graduate with good marks never has to worry about finding a job,” says KP Panta, principal of Rajdhani College, adding that the entrepreneur skills taught in the programme also helps those that would rather start a business of their own.

The BBA encompass both theoretical and practical knowledge. It’s an applied course that aims to prepare manpower capable of handling mid-level managerial work. The programme usually includes general business courses and advanced courses for specific concentrations. Some of the areas of specialisation in the BBA are Marketing, Finance and Accounting, among others. Furthermore, it is an academic programme that offers a job-oriented curriculum, which integrates various disciplines from the social sciences, mathematics, management and information technology.

The degree also offers enough breadth in complementary academic subjects to prepare students to function effectively in complex organisations, small to medium enterprises or the public sector. The four-year graduation timeframe also helps the students to accumulate a total of 16 years of schooling, which is the minimum number of years that students need to have under their belt if they want to join a master’s programme in universities abroad. The eight-semester programme under the affiliation of four universities within the country cost from Rs 260,000 to Rs 500,000, depending upon the colleges and universities they are affiliated with, while the colleges under foreign affiliation charge from Rs 0.6 to 1.5 million for the four years programme.

Eligibility required for joining a BBA programmea) Prospective students should have completed 12 years of schooling or its equivalent, with at least second-division marks from any university, board or institution recognised by TU.

    b) Prospective students need to pass a written test: the CMAT (Central Management Admission Test), conducted by the Dean’s Office under the Faculty of Management.

    c) Prospective students need to clear the interview with the concerned college.

    The marketable MBA option

With the country’s business community increasingly employing modern-day methods of doing business , there’s now a thriving market for management graduates. Businesses know that to remain relevant, one of the surest bets for them is to invest in MBA (Master in Business Administration) graduates who have a high level of market competence and practical knowledge.

That is good news for MBA students who would like to get into the banking sector, corporate entities and the like, or even for those who want to go it alone and start out as entrepreneurs, emboldened by the knowledge that they have undergone the rigours of an MBA degree.

    Educational options
Not surprisingly, educational institutions here have more than welcomed the trend and have been at work trying to meet the demand for MBA grads. Several national-level universities, including Tribhuvan University (TU), Purbanchal University (PU), Pokhara University (PU) and Kathmandu University (KU) have authorised dozens of

colleges to run MBA programmes. Furthermore, there are almost half a dozen colleges running MBA programmes with affiliations from foreign universities.

The MBA programme in Nepal has been broadly segregated into three major types: the regular MBA, which is best suited for regular students; evening MBA programmes, which work for regular students as well, but are targeted more towards job holders who can attend school after work; and executive MBA degrees, which cater to professionals who have already held a job for at least four to five years.

And within the programmes themselves, there are slight variations in the type of MBA degree offered, the courses differing from college to college.

According to Binod Khatri, principal of Phoenix College of Management, Kathmandu, students have been increasingly coveting the marketability of a postgraduate degree in business because the market is so welcoming of new grads; and the MBA programme has thus become one of the more popular options for today’s students. Luckily for them, there are so many colleges getting into the game that many of them have started competing with each other to lure the students. One way the colleges have been trying to lure students into their institution is making the course more affordable.

It is estimated that the country produces 1,300 to 1,400 MBA graduates every year. Furthermore, because many students today are finishing their undergraduate degree in an era where instances of young entrepreneurs striking out on their own at a relatively young age is no longer an anomaly, there are many such enterprising individuals moving on to do a Master’s in business , which means that the pool of MBAs keeps increasing.

    Future
There also seems to be a nice ripple effect at play in the market here that seems to be making an MBA degree an enticing option. “If you observe most business institutions in Nepal, there is a huge demand for capable and dynamic leaders,” says Ramesh Silwal, principal of Golden Gate College, Kathmandu. When a business ropes in the best graduates available, its competitor too will have to think about bringing in well-educated graduates to keep pace. And if the business houses have to compete with a corporate house setting up shop here in the country, then that means not just job opportunities for current MBA grads, but also a raising of the bar across the board: It’s almost like there is a feedback mechanism that comes into play whereby as the market takes in better managers, the more managers that the other players in the market end up needing.

    Cost factor
But even though the competition among colleges has largely helped in reining in tuition fees for the degree, the MBA programme is still among the costlier disciplines in Nepal. Depending on the college, students are charged anywhere from Rs 300,000 to Rs 600,000 for a four-semester course which lasts for two years. According to Khatri, the fees are justifiable because MBA graduates in Nepal have been finding pretty good jobs pretty easily. But teachers do want to warn prospective students that an MBA by itself does not guarantee cushy first contracts. “The job prospects still largely depend upon the students themselves. It’s mostly the competitive and dynamic students who have become successful in getting stupendous job offers,” said Khatri. Ramesh Silwal of Golden Gate College added another important caveat. “The cost of MBA studies is high. Therefore, students need to be serious about seeking the appropriate jobs that justify their investment,” he said.

    Challenges
As in any industry that has seen immense growth and development, several problems have cropped up in the MBA education sector too. “The most serious problem seems to be lack of monitoring and evaluation of colleges by the concerned universities,” said Silwal.

“The rampant distribution of affiliation without the governing bodies’ measuring the capacity of colleges can be damaging in the long run.” The other challenge, according to Silwal, is lack of willingness on the part of corporations and companies to offer internship opportunities to students. “If you send a student to a bank for an internship, for example, they will hardly get even a designated seat,” he said. One way out would be for universities and colleges to collaborate with corporate groups to create internship facilities together, he added.

But as with most majors, the main challenges concern things that are within the control of the students themselves. “MBA is an intensive course. Students should devote at least eight to 12 hours a day to their studies,” said Khatri. “Since many students in Nepal are already involved in some profession, they don’t have enough time to devote to their studies.”
