US to take Diversity Visa applications from Oct - ,Nepal 2015 DV lottery

The US Embassy in Kathmandu on Tuesday announced the opening of the application period for the 2015 Diversity Visa lottery from October 1. Submissions of the DV applications will continue till November 2.

“The US Embassy reminds applicants that there is no fee to enter the DV lottery.  The US Embassy recommends against using a consultant to assist you with your application,” said a US embassy statement.

Entries for the 2015 DV lottery must be submitted electronically during the registration period. The embassy also asked aspirants to follow the electronic process while submitting applications.

The embassy stressed the fact that simply being selected as a DV winner, and even the receipt of a second letter, does not guarantee a US visa.

“At the time of your visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you meet the qualifications and are eligible for the DV under the laws of the United States,” the statement said.

DV lottery winners must have completed minimum twelve years of formal education, or equivalent, to qualify for a visa. Vocational degrees, including from the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), will only count if they are accepted in Nepal as a basis for further academic study in all institutes of higher education. Vocational degrees that allow limited admission to selected programmes are not considered twelve years of formal education for the purposes of the DV programme, the embassy informed.

Medical Education in Nepal- Preparing for a career in Medicine

Until 1971, Nepali students travelling abroad for medical education was not a new trend. There were no institutions that offered MBBS courses here, while only a handful of health institutions ran nursing and other basic health courses.

In 1972, the Institute of Medicine (IoM) under Tribhuvan University started certificate-level nursing courses, while it started the Bachelor’s in Nursing (BN) course in 1978. The same year, the IoM also started the MBBS programme for the first time in the country.

Initially, students from health assistant backgrounds were qualified for the course after passing an entrance examination. However, it was later mandated that the students from science background would only be eligible for the MBBS.Sixteen years after government-affiliated institutions started medical studies, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences and Manipal College of Medical Sciences also jumped on the bandwagon. Now, the number of medical colleges offering MBBS course has reached 18, producing 2,000 doctors every year. In addition, three dental colleges are also in operation.

Also, a total of 48 institutes in affiliation with various universities run Bachelors of Nursing programme, producing over 600 graduate nurses every year.

“The private sector is the major driving force of medical education in the country,” said Dr SK Kanodia, president of the Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges of Nepal. “Also our medical graduates are recognised worldwide.”

Dr Kanodiya said Indian students studying in Nepali medical colleges are more successful in the examination of the medical council of India, which has made parents to send their children to medical colleges in Nepal.

Gopi Neupane, promoter of Nagarik College of Health Sciences, Bhaktapur, said the capability of graduate nursing students to take the reins as a leader has also made the course attractive.

Administrative positions held by BSc Nursing or Bachelor’s in Nursing graduates such as nursing administrator, nurse in charge and nursing supervisor, among others, have also attracted students towards the field. Neupane said nursing can be a major field in the country as it is reeling under acute shortage of nurses.

The cost for the education varies from colleges to colleges. Despite the ceiling of Rs 3.2 million fixed by the government for MBBS programme, many private colleges charge more than Rs 3.5 million for the 5-years course.

In case of nursing, a student has to pay around Rs 500,000 for the BN course, while they have to pay around Rs 800,000 for BSc Nursing.

Despite the private sector’s claim that they are the major thrust behind medical education in the country, critique argue that the quality of the education is largely compromised.

Dr JP Agrawal, a medical educationist, said in terms of volume, it is the private sector driving the medical education, but in terms of quality, a majority of them have been compromising it.

Studying Chartered Accountancy(CA) in Nepal: CA-A global qualification

Chartered Accountancy (CA) remains a highly preferred career option for students who want to land high-ranking jobs in domestic as well as international organisations.

CA imparts the best combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience with analytical as well as technical skills on a student, making them capable of looking after the entire operation and management of a modern business organisation. Chartered accountants, of late, are being considered business leaders who can take up roles beyond auditing and financial management.

The demand for CAs is on the rise along with the growing private sector. Despite being one of the most attractive professions, the number of CAs is still, experts say.

In the past, students who wished to pursue CA were compelled to go abroad or India. But now, over a dozen institutes have been offering the CA degree in affiliation with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). With the improvement in technology, many of the institutes are also offering foreign degrees through online means.

CCMA College, CIMA Academics and Prime Chartered Academy, among others, are the leading names offering CA programme. CA is a five-year course. The course includes a two-year curriculum-based intensive study, and a three-year Articleship, practical-based training.

CCMA College, one of the prominent institutes situated in Putalisadak, Kathmandu, has been offering CA degree since 2003. The college, which is accredited by both ICAN and ICAI, claims to be equipped by professionals and experts in the areas concerned. The institute also claims to be providing incomparable services in the field of Accounts, Finance, and Taxation through regular programmes and tailor-made packages to the pursuant.

"CA is a highly professional degree which enables the students to specialise mainly in the area of law, taxation, audit and other financial areas," said Deepesh K  Thapaliya, managing director of CCMA. According to him, the degree holders can work independently as a financial consultant in audit firms, the government agencies, tax department and academic institutes, besides opening a CA firm of their own.

CA is considered a highly reputed degree which enables the degree holder to easily pursue a professional career. "Even fresh CA graduates could present their candidacy for the first class officer in government or private organisations," said Thapaliya.

CCMA envisions preparing professional experts for trade, industry and commerce. It strives particularly for instilling need-based skills in students.

CCMA has been providing intensive coaching classes designed by ICAN and ICAI. The curriculum from ICAN has been divided into three segments. CAP-I is eight-month foundation course, while CAP-II is one-year intermediate course and CAP-III is thee-year final-level course that also includes Articleship.

Under the ICAI programme, CPT is a six-month foundation course. The second level is called IPCC that is a nine-month course, while CA final is three-year course with Articleship.

According to Thapaliya, the students can study first two levels of the ICAI programme in Nepal, while for the final three years, they must have to enrol in an Indian institute.

So far, CCMA has 56 CA passouts from. It claims its students hold good positions in reputed organisations both inside and outside the country. Intakes at CCMA are open June and December every year.

Earlier, CA used to be considered suitable only for students with management background. However, even science students are getting attracted towards CA. "As there is high competition to pursue engineering and medical degree apart from being expensive, many students from science are also being attracted towards CA," said Thapaliya.

The total cost for completing the programme at CCMA is Rs 286,200 and Rs 226,600 for ICAN- and ICAI-based courses, respectively.

An estimated 7,000 students were enrolled in CA by the end of the last fiscal year. According to ICAN, 230 students have passed out so far in the ICAN-based course. As per the institute, CA graduates from ICAI still have to get through three additional subject papers, including law, taxation and audit, to be eligible to work as CA in Nepal.

"Due to higher possibility of getting good jobs and relatively lower cost for course completion, many students are getting attracted towards the degree," said Tanka Lal Shrestha, coordinator at Prime Chartered Academy, New Baneshwor. The institute has also been offering CA degree from both ICAN and ICAI.

Established in 2004, Prime has 200 CA passouts, while 300-400 are currently enrolled. The total cost for CA in Prime is Rs 250,000-300,000.

CA has been an attracting option for Plus Two passouts from any background like science, humanities or commerce. Bikash Adhikari, a student who has just enrolled for CA foundation course at CCMA, said he enrolled for the degree because of good future prospects. "Although the course is challenging, its scope looks brighter and broader," he said.

Hospitality Management Education in Nepal-A bright future in hospitality management

Increasing number hotels and resorts across the country is making the hospitality industry full of opportunities.

With tourist arrivals maintaining an upward trend since mid-2009, the sector is going through an interesting phase, with massive investment pouring in from domestic as well as foreign investors.

Travel trade entrepreneurs say one of the major reasons for increased confidence of investors in the sector is the increasing demand for hotel rooms, which they say is expected to grow significantly over the next couple of years.

Moreover, a number of world-class brands are entering Nepal in the near future, and there would be a rise in demand, particularly for high-level, skilled professionals. Besides, hotels and world-class resorts will be hiring people in different departments like kitchen, service, housekeeping, food and beverage, sales and marketing.

Hospitality leaders say Nepal will have to produce more than 1,5000 skilled manpower over the next five years to cater to the growing demand from the sector.

People’s perception towards hotel and hospitality management education has been changing. The programme is not merely about culinary skills, but hotel management courses could groom students for success in ever-expanding hospitality sector. Moreover, the opportunities are not limited to domestic boundaries.

“Skilled manpower is in greater demand in the global arena,” says Khem Raj Lakai, founder and CEO of Global Academy of Tourism and Hospitality Education (GATE). As investors confidence picks up in the hospitality sector, Lakai estimates that Nepal will have at least five new five-star hotels in the next five years.

Official figures investors, including domestic and foreign, have committed investment in 65 hotel projects that will add 3,036 beds to the country’s tourist accommodation capacity.

Non-resident Nepali Shesh Ghale is also building a five-star hotel in Kathmandu. The property will be known as Sheraton Kathmandu Hotel. Ghale’s MIT Group Holding Nepal has signed an agreement with Starwood Hotels and Resort Worldwide Inc and has set the project rolling. Slated to open in February 2018, the 225-room hotel will be managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

Likewise, Nepal Hospitality Group has signed a management agreement with a subsidiary of Marriott International to open a four-star property dubbed Fairfield by Marriott Kathmandu. The international brand, Marriott, will look after the management of the hotel. The proposed 10-storey hotel under construction in Thamel will have 108 rooms and is spread over two-and-a-half ropanies of land and is slated to open by the beginning of 2016.

Besides, the country’s established business houses are increasingly getting involved in tourism. Some of the country’s well-known conglomerates such as Golyan Group, TM Dugar Group and Chaudhary Group are pouring billions in the hotel sector.

“As domestic and global market demand for skilled manpower is increasing, the tourism schools are attracting more and more students,” says Lakai. The collages are also expending accordingly, he said. “In additional, Nepal’s hotel management colleges are gradually attracting foreign students and this reflects Nepal can become a prominent education hub too.”

Established seven years ago, GATE, a Swiss-affiliated college, offers a three-year Higher Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management accredited by the Swiss School of Tourism & Hospitality. Around 90 percent students are sent as interns abroad in different star hotels.

Presently, there are an estimated 26-30 colleges in the country under the affiliation of Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Kathmandu University and Purbanchal University. There are also a number of hotel management schools under international affiliation.

These institutions are providing degrees such as four-year Bachelor in Hotel Management, or two-year Master in Hotel Management, besides vocational training.

These also come attached with eventual overseas internships in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and India, as well as job placements for the deserving.

Institutes like Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management, Global Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism Technical Centre, Bagmati Hotel Training Centre, Mahalaxmi Chef Associates, Basematics Hotel and Catering Training Centre and Shangri La Tourism and Hotel Training offer training in different areas related to the hotel business. These include both short-and long-term programmes.

Nepal has witnessed improved tourist arrivals since mid-2009 due to the improvements in the peace process. At present, Nepal attracts 800,000 tourists every year and the government has envisaged an ambitious plan, Vision 20-20, that aims to attract two million tourists by 2020 every year. The private sector has realised that tourism could be a long-term industry if long-lasting peace prevails.

Kashi Nath Khanal, principal of Quest International College, explains more opportunities would be available in the hospitality industry if the country sees a sustained peace. “There are a number of colleges providing quality, world-class education,” he said, adding the country is now producing around 400 hospitality graduates annually.

The hotel industry also has tremendous growth potential. Nepal is an ideal destination for tourists as it is the only country with the most diverse topography, religion and culture.

As investors have committed investment in 65 hotels and resorts, Khanal said Nepal’s hospitality sector needs at least 15,000 to 18,000 skilled individuals within next five years.

In addition, the demand for skilled manpower is on the rise globally. “Our sole motto is to groom students with both local and international exposure by providing internship facilities in and out of the country,” Khanal said. “We provide both knowledge- and training-based education so that it helps our graduates compete in the global market,” Khanal added. For example, Quest International College fresh graduates have been offered more than Rs 75,000 monthly salary abroad.

When it comes to students’ choice, the pioneer Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management is at the forefront. NATHM has a four-decade history in tourism and hotel management education.

Shiva Prasad Jaishi, senior officer at NATHM, says the college more than 33,000 graduates in both academic and training courses. “NATHM’s academic graduates are well received in the global hospitality sector in higher positions,” says Jaishi, adding the college was working to develop itself as a centre for excellence in the South Asian region to help it gain global exposure and even attract international students. NATHM will next year launching an 80-room four-star hotel on its premises in a bid to provide skill-oriented education to its students. The proposed hotel will also have four apartment, four suites and two penthouses.

Nepal’s travel and tourism sector accounted for 3.6 percent of the total employment in the country in 2012, according to Travel and Tourism Economic Impact 2012 Nepal published by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

The report shows that the travel trade provided 553,500 jobs directly in 2012. The contribution was 412,500 in 2011. The WTTC report has projected that the travel trade sector’s contribution to the country’s total employment will rise by 7 percent in 2013. Direct employment provided by the sector includes employment by hotels, travel agents and airlines and other passenger transportation services. It also includes the activities of restaurants and leisure industries directly supported by tourists.

Engineering education in Nepal-Engineering education has come a long way

Bharat Pradhan, a Bachelor in Engineering (BE) graduate from Pulchowk Engineering Campus, was always passionate about engineering. But that was not the only reason he pursued a career in engineering, while there were a number of other areas here he could have entered with his good grades in the higher secondary level. He always believed that a career in engineering could offer what no other profession could: “A door to a bigger world where opportunities are infinite”.

Now, with an engineering degree in hand, Pradhan thinks he was right in believing that engineering offers a plenty of job opportunities, superior remuneration, social prestige and personal and professional aspirations. “If you are not overtly ambitious, engineering will not disappoint you. There is considerable scope for graduates with mechanical, civil and computer engineering inside the country. Although the starting salary is nominal, those with experience are earning handsomely,” said Pradhan, whose specialises in civil engineering. Various factors like booming scope, lucrative remuneration and prestige have allured an ever-increasing number of Nepali students towards engineering. The unprecedented rise in the number of engineering colleges in Nepal and gradually growing enrolment of new students better reflect this fact. Official records show approximately 7,000 students get enrolled in engineering programmes in Nepal every year. The figure does not incorporate a large number of students who go to India or abroad for study.

According to the Nepal Engineering Council, there are 42 engineering colleges affiliated with Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Pokhara University and Purbanchal University, currently operating in Nepal.

This is a great leap forward compared to some three decades ago, when just two colleges—Pulchowk Engineering Campus and Thapathali Engineering Campus—were only institutions to cater to demands of students.

“The current scale of engineering product is not being able to meet the demand of internal market as many go outside for further education and work. The scope is likely to expand by a significant margin once the industrial and infrastructural development takes pace,” said Rameshwor Rijal, principal of Kantipur Engineering College.

Colleges claim they have been able to impart engineering courses in the south Asian standards. The human resources and infrastructure in these institutions and their products are on par with international standards for graduate level. That’s the reason why Nepali products, to some extent, are able to compete with graduates of other countries while vying for overseas jobs.

Notwithstanding the growth and all these success, critics think the Nepali engineering sector still lags far behind compared to Western standards. There are a number of sectors where Nepal needs to concentrate on to give first-class education with lesser financial burden.

The modern engineering has surpassed traditional boundaries by offering solution to every kind of day-to-day problem, ranging from protecting the environment with plants and microbes to developing bio-fuel for cars and trucks. Despite being a multi-sectorial and diverse field, engineering colleges in Nepal have focused just on limited and often traditional areas of studies like civil, electrical, automobile, computer and mechanical engineering.

That’s why a large section of Nepali students are choosing countries like India, Germany and Norway over Nepal. Instead of increasing the number of colleges, the focus should be on incorporating newer areas of engineering. Colleges should offer newer courses at reasonable costs.

Domestic engineering colleges have not been able to meet the demands of prospective students fully. Students from private colleges said they are compelled to pay higher fees although most of the colleges lack sufficient practical education. At present, a student needs to pay around Rs 800,000 to complete the Bachelor in Engineering course. Those studying under quota, on the other hand, have to pay around Rs 300,000 for the four-year programme.

Though students claim that it is hard to get job in the market except for some who perform extraordinary, in examination, college owners say there are ample opportunities in and out side the country. “Nepali students have done well in most prestigious engineering colleges around the world and even average students are getting jobs inside the country. But it’s true that we have failed to link up the academia with the industry,” said Rijal. Records at Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) says around 1,000 engineers are going to Qatar every year as the country is carrying out massive construction in the run up to the FIFA World Cup 2022.

IT: Get prepared for the future- IT Education in Nepal

The emergence of technology as a major field in the global job market has projected Information and Technology (IT) as one of the major areas for higher studies.

As a profession, the Bureau of Labour Statistics of the United States has ranked IT as the fastest growing professions over the next 10 years. While IT grows by leaps and bounds in the global market, Nepal isn’t an exception.

The ever increasing technological innovations and their phenomenal success overseas have attracted students towards IT. How influential IT as a subject is can be gauged by the fact that the country which saw the launch of IT education some 15 years ago with computer engineering, now offers a dozen subjects.

There are above 150 IT colleges affiliated with domestic universities like Tribhuvan University (TU) and Purbanchal University (PU) and numerous other universities from across the globe. It is estimated that over 1,000 graduates of Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology (BSc CSIT) come out annually.

“We are witnessing a constantly rising craze towards IT-related subjects for the last two-three years,” said Krishna Chandra Poudel, director at Trinity International College. “The unlimited scope that IT as a subject offers has attracted numerous students towards this subject.” Poudel said BSc CSIT, a four-year eight-semester course offered by the TU, has been receiving tremendous response now, although it was launched a decade ago. “We have 36 quotas for BSc CSIT and we are running in full occupancy,” Poudel said.

Amrit Thapa, business development manager at Softwarica International College, says the wider prospects in terms of jobs in the local as well as global market have made IT a prominent choice for students. “IT has emerged as something that drives a country’s economy. Its importance is being felt within the country and beyond,” Thapa said. “This is why students who are aware about its impact are joining courses on computing, networking and software engineering.”

What makes IT an area with wider prospects is the growing number of businesses and industries, making a shift from traditional ways of data keeping to modern-day efficient and reliable technologies. Not only the private institutions, but the government too seems to be adopting the latest technologies, increasing the opportunities for those wanting to pursue a career in the field of technology. In a way, the IT sector of the country, according to experts, is a “virgin” sector, where a lot is still to be done. “Numerous students are getting opportunity to try their hands in developing websites. This is helping them earn as well as learn even before completing their study,” Thapa said. Another major reason that makes IT a smart option for the young aspirants is the returns against investment. IT programmes in Nepal normally costs around Rs 450,000 to Rs 500,000. For those willing to acquire graduation from colleges that have tie-ups with foreign universities, the cost ranges from Rs 600,000 to Rs 800,000. Experts say an IT-proficient person having around three-five years of experience can earn up to Rs 150,000 per month in a Nepali company itself. Nepali companies like F1 Soft International, Leapfrog Technologies, Dearwalk, Javra Software and Mercantile, among others, can be among the prominent destinations for students, apart from big corporate houses and multinationals.

“There is a huge potential in the IT sector within the country. Technology is something that changes from time to time and we are really short of capable manpower,” said Biswas Dhakal, president of F1 Soft International. “We are tying up with several colleges and educational institutions to get IT personnel as per our need.”

Another factor that has made IT professionals rare in the country is the exit of qualified manpower to foreign countries. Dhakal said the lack of awareness among people that there is a massive opportunity within the country too has prevented the retention of qualified manpower. Despite IT education showing a momentous growth, both Poudel and Thapa feel the government needs to promote IT for achieving greater success. “IT education has emerged as the need of every individual. Since it is s practical-based course, even students performing average in theoretical subjects can do well. The government should take some initiative to spread the knowledge about IT education,” Thapa said.

BBA Education in Nepal: A platform for successful management career

Gone are the days when the Nepali society used to think management education had no career prospects. Today, management has become the second most sought-after stream after education.

As management education provides students with managerial and entrepreneurial skills, leadership qualities and problem solving abilities, the students are prepared to take up managerial responsibilities in almost every sector.

There are ample choices in the bachelors level for management education enthusiasts—ranging from Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA), Bachelors in Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor in Hotel Management, Bachelor in Information Management, Bachelor in Travels and Tourism Management to Bachelors in Event Management. However, BBA is the most preferred programme among students.

With the restoration of democracy in 1990, Nepal adopted liberal economic policies which accelerated the pace of establishment of commercial entities, including industries, banks, insurance companies and large business complexes. The increase in the number of such corporations also pushed up the demand for qualified managers who could lead both the administrative and business activities.

The increase in demand for managers instigated Kathmandu University (KU) to introduce BBA in 1997 for the first time in Nepal. The 120-credit programme was introduced keeping in mind the ever increasing demand for competent human resource in the banking and other commercial sectors.

The success gained by KU prompted Pokhara University to start the programme from the very beginning of its existence in 2000, followed by Tribhuvan University (TU) in 2002. As a matter of fact, BBA and MBA were the programmes Purbanchal University started its service with.

Currently, 79 colleges are offering BBA programme in affiliation with domestic universities, while there are a dozen more institutions that offer the programme in direct affiliation with American, British and Indian universities. There are 37 colleges affiliated with Pokhara University, four with KU, 17 with Purbanchal University, and 21 with the oldest university, TU.

The BBA programme aims at preparing students to become competent, skilled, confident and socially responsive professionals who can effectively support managerial, entrepreneurial and leadership roles in businesses and social organisations in today’s competitive environment. It offers a wide range of concentration and elective courses to match students’ individual interests in line with the demand in the employment market.

With proper academic and course planning, students can take advantages of specialisation in two functional areas (administration and business) of management during their four years of study. “Semester system in teaching and grading system of evaluation, in addition to strictly-followed academic calendar and internship make it (BBA) the most sought-after business course at present,” said Surendra Shrestha, chairman of Nobel Academy.

The programme also provides students with an opportunity to learn, gain exposure and network through internship programmes, which make them competent enough to land lucrative jobs. BBA students can easily get credits transferred to foreign colleges, which is not easy with other programmes.

It is an academic programme that offers job-oriented curriculum—an integration of various disciplines like social sciences, mathematics, management and information technology. The degree offers both practical management education and enough breadth in complementary academic subjects to prepare students to function effectively in complex organisations, small to medium enterprises or the public sector. Over 400,000 students are currently enrolled in BBA across the country.

Another major quality of the programme is students from any faculty can study the course. While the pass percentage for other faculties hovers around just 30-40 percent, the success rate of the BBA programme is above 80 percent across all universities.

“Apart from the easy availability of job opportunities, entrepreneurial skills imparted by the programme help student start their own business,” claimed Khagendra Ojha of Uniglobe Colleges.

According to college owners, BBA graduates never find it hard to sell themselves in the job market as there are 1,486 commercial bank branches, 7,064 development bank branches, and around 1,000 finance companies and hundreds of cooperatives, and they are expanding every year. The eight-semester programme costs from Rs 260,000 to Rs 500,000 in colleges affiliated with domestic universities, while colleges under foreign affiliation charge from Rs 0.6 to 1.5 million.

    FEATURES
    > Being a four-year course, it has global recognition
    > Over 40 subjects to choose from covering diverse areas > Focuses on practical education rather than theoretical
    > Timely academic session and result publication
    > Provides high job prospects
    > Timely course revision
    > As there are limited intakes, courses are taught efficiently > It also helps in personality development of students
